PHOTO SAINT GERMAIN - AT WORK / IN WORKS : REPRESENTATION(S) OF THE ARTIST IN HIS STUDIO

Does entering an artist's studio allow us to pierce the mystery of the creative process? What do we see when looking at the photograph of an artist in his studio? The artist often stands amongst his works, claiming his own creativity or looking a little awkward in a formal composition. Sometimes the artist is just standing there, hovering, as if suspended in his den. Other shots show us the artist in action, focused on his effort, as if unaware of the lens staring at him.
Since the nineteenth century the photographic medium is part of this attempt to explore the mechanisms of art production. The fascination of photographers for the artist at work or "in works" does not shed much light on the creative process. It essentially documents it and in particular reflects our understanding of the artist's identity. Thus Rodin, through the lens of Jean Limet, poses with a distant look, a powerful hand on the base of his work « La Tour du travail », wearing a belted coat fastened by a single rope like a monk's robe. As for Giacometti, he is photographed by Sabine Weiss sculpting in his suit and tie, an incarnation of the modern man. With Henri Cartier-Bresson, the outstretched arms of Rauschenberg, crouching, surrounded with works in progress, almost appear to be those of a labourer... As many visions which exalt our propensity to build a mythology of the creator.

Pour cette nouvelle participation au festival Bizarro de Saint-Germain des Prés, La librairie Signatures vous propose de découvrir une exposition née de la rencontre avec le photographe Patrice Bouvier. Au coeur de la thématique de 2016, Bêtes de Scènes et Sacrés Monstres, l'exposition propose un regard croisé entre deux séries de photographies : une sélection de portraits de femmes qui ont su s'imposer sur le devant de la scène pour devenir des « monstres sacrés » et une série de portraits de femmes-clowns, de « sacrés monstres », saisies par Patrice Bouvier. La mise en parallèle de ces tirages présentés en 14 diptyques, joue sur un effet visuel de similitude, de clin d'oeil ou d'opposition. Mais l'écho se fait aussi dans le regard que ces femmes-clowns, qui ont su batailler pour faire éclore leur modernité dans le monde du cirque, portent sur ces célèbres figures.
